CCC President Word
As the new president of Chinese Culture Center, I am truly honored and humbled to be associated with this organization that has an amazing number of devoted volunteers that makes up our community. As always, changes in our community and the world around us offer both an important and sacred opportunity to reflect on our lives. 2009 was certainly a dynamic and eventful year, with recession that has made things difficult for many, we are also thriving as an organization and very hopeful for a brighter future.
Given the current economic environment, now more than ever, we need to build a stronger community that can continue to offer support to our members. One of the key elements in Chinese culture is resiliency, with that, I have no doubt we will continue to make progress. Together, we have the opportunity to build an even stronger organization by capitalizing on our past accomplishments and recognizing the opportunities that are before us.
I have been privileged to serve on the Chinese Culture Center Board of Governors since 2009. It has been a pleasure to get involved in the community and witness how much this organization has grown and prospered in such a short time. Before I look at the year ahead of us, I want to first take this opportunity to thank the following previously served Board Members are retiring this year: Ric Barry, Yuan Dong, Sam Hu, Bailin Shaw, Hailing Wu, Michael Xu and Ray Xu. On behalf of all members, I want to thank these individuals for their hard work and contribution to CCC and the community over the years. We owe them all a great deal of gratitude and look forward to their continuous involvement in future CCC and community based activities.
Looking forward, I also want to welcome new members of the board: Mingxin Lu, Serina Shi, Amina Weiland, Shuning Zhan, Rongguo Zhao, Frank Zhu and Jamie Zhu. As the board and I embark on the journey for 2010 and beyond, there are several key things I’d like to highlight:
First, the ever expanding needs to continue Chinese Language and Culture education has put CCLA, our language academy at a critical juncture. With the great success our school has achieved over the past years, it has also endured growing pains and faced with challenging issues. Over the past two months, I’ve worked closely with the board of directors as well as current CCLA school administrative team to evaluate future operating model for the school. As many of you know, there have been some significant changes to the school management structure. These changes were made based on careful consideration of the proposal from current school administrative team balanced with continuous focus around fiscal responsibility. I am happy to report that the board has approved the operating budget for the next school year. In addition, we have constructed an Education Committee consist of current board of directors to provide ongoing management and support of CCLA administrative team. Currently we are actively recruiting the new administrative team including a new principal to lead CCLA to a better future. In addition, we are looking to organize a PTA for each campus to support the needs of our children, our teachers and our school.
Second, one of our goals is to make your membership more valuable and we are constantly evaluating our programs and services. Please review our email communications, read our school and CCC newsletters and visit our website, www.ccc-ct.org, for more information on our activities and services. CCC membership places you among a very select group that has earned many benefits. I hope that you will take advantage of them. In the meantime, I welcome your suggestions and feedback. The only way to get better is to listen to the needs of our community. On the other hand, I encourage your involvement in the community work. Given we are very much a volunteer based organization, more people get involved will result in progress by leaps and bunds. In fact, I’m looking to build a network of volunteers who can help drive better programs and activities for the community. Please send an email to [email protected]if you are interested.
Third, it is never too early to make everyone aware of the United Way campaign. Each year, we use this important source of income to support CCLA school budget as well as sponsor key events in the community, the largest one being the Chinese New Year Gala. We as a non-for-profit organization, now more than ever, need the support of everyone to drive United Way donation. As a qualified United Way agent (United Way Code 5342), we appreciate the support from the CCC members and supporters in the past. We will continue to improve our program offerings to meet the demand of our community. I welcome your suggestions and would urge you to become part of the volunteer team contributing to better community programs. We want your continuous support. Please think of the Chinese Culture Center when filling your United Way Campaign pledge with your employer.
In addition, working with our board, we have laid out our annual plan for the year. Some of the key activities planned for the year are listed as follows:
· Dragon Boat & Asian Festival
· Summer Picnic
· Moon Festival Karaoke Party
· Children’s Talent Show
· Annual Dance Party
· Chinese New Year Gala
· Member Newsletter
As we develop more details around these planned events, we will be publishing an event calendar on our website.
Again, I want to thank all of you and encourage your involvement in CCC and CCLA activities. I look forward to sharing my vision of the organization with you in future communications, and I welcome your suggestions and feedback.
I know that together we can continue to build CCC into an even greater organization.
